New Zealand participates in the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) through the Australian and New Zealand IODP Consortium (ANZIC).
IODP is an international marine geoscience program that explores Earth's history and structure recorded sediments and rocks beneath the seafloor and monitors sub-seafloor environments. IODP builds upon the earlier successes of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) and Ocean Drilling Program (ODP), which revolutionized our view of Earth history and global processes in the course of 40 years of ocean basin exploration. IODP greatly expands the reach of these previous programs by using multiple drilling platforms to achieve its scientific goals. These goals are outlined in the IODP science plan.
New Zealand participation is coordinated by the NZ IODP Office based at GNS Science. IODP is funded by national membership fees and New Zealand’s contribution of US $280,000 per year is derived from contributions from GNS Science and five partner universities: Victoria University of Wellington and the Universities of Otago, Canterbury, Waikato and Auckland. Participation in IODP is open to all New Zealand-based researchers and students.
